BACKGROUND

Social media is one of the inventions that has changed our world for better. Things are done faster, easier and cheaper using the internet and social media. Individuals, corporate bodies and government agencies use social media to advance their course and make great profit. But as interesting as this is, social media is being abused and misused by many. Many lives have been trapped or destroyed by abusing it. This lesson aims at addressing some of these abuses to ensure believers do not become casualties.

NOTES ON THE LESSON

PART 1: WORSHIP GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY - DEUT. 6:1-15

Worshipping God is the whole essence of our being as mankind. We were made in God’s image to do this. Our worship must be without adulteration. Nothing must share or take the place of God in our lives. We must worship God with our spirit, soul and body, heart and strength. We must use every resource (material, energy, time, knowledge, finance etc.) given to us to worship God. At no time should our resources take God’s place or share His place in our lives. If this happens, then we would have become idolatrous.

God also expects us to teach our children to know and love God. The responsibility of bringing up children lies primarily on the parents. God will hold every parent accountable for who their children become. Every available means and aids must be used to bring them up in God’s way. Children should not be left alone to be taught by the environment or social media. Many ungodly contents have been sponsored and are being pumped into social media space to corrupt the souls of men. It is the responsibility of parents to protect their children against these evil contents.

The fact that we are able to afford data, smartphones, tablets and other devices should not give us the liberty to do what we like with them. God owns and gives all resources and we must understand that we will be accountable to Him on how we use these devices. The resources God gives us are not meant to drive us away from God but to help us serve Him better.

PART 2: SOCIAL MEDIA: NOT A SUBSTITUTE - HEB. 10:22-25

Fellowshipping with the brethren is important to the growth of individual and group of believers. This is why the Bible instructs us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves. One of the growing trends today in the Body of Christ is virtual fellowship. Services are being held online where members can join from anywhere, they are without necessarily coming together physically. This has helped more men who may ordinarily not be able to join the services to join and be blessed from anywhere they find themselves. The restrictions have been reduced since God is a Spirit. He can be worshipped from anywhere.

However, virtual meetings should not completely replace the physical ones. Social media can help us fellowship but it is not a perfect substitute for physical meetings. There are a lot of benefits from physical meetings that cannot be gotten from virtual ones. The physical bonding helps foster trust and communion. We can also read the mood of the people and help can be provided for those who need it. These are part of the benefits that may not be present where fellowship is restricted to virtual meetings.

Apart from these, there are distractions that come with online meetings. People’s concentration is not always like when they gather for physical meetings. Some people join but they mute their microphones, put off their cameras and continue with whatever they feel like doing. There are also technological failures with social media that can make virtual meetings to be unproductive like the physical ones. Internet disruptions and low battery on devices do sometimes hinder people from maximising the blessings in a fellowship. We should strive to be in physical meetings except when it is completely beyond our control or when the meetings are purely virtual.

PART 3: AVOID FUTILITY IN YOUR THOUGHT - ROM. 1:21-32

The eye is one of the major gateways to the heart. A lot of information, positive and negative, flood our hearts through the eyes. We make decisions and choices from the processed thoughts stored up in our hearts. We are tempted and lured by the devil based on the information stored in our hearts. When the information available in the heart is negative, we are sure to make negative decisions. Our decisions and actions become our characters and then our lifestyles. This is why the Scriptures say, as he thinks in his heart, so he is (Pro 23:7). We are not better than the thoughts that rule our hearts.

There are a lot of negative and ungodly contents on social media that we must run away from if we want to remain pure and godly. People learn different unholy habits on Social media. Immorality, criminality, fraud etc. are some of the negative behaviours available online. We must guard against this and also encourage others not to get involved. God must rule our hearts and the only way He can do that is for us to keep our hearts pure for Him because we are His temple. We must make His habitation (our hearts) pure for Him.

CONCLUSION

Social media is a wonderful tool that can advance our lives in all areas from the spiritual to the physical. If well managed, social media can aid spiritual growth and the edification of the body of Christ. But if abused, it can completely wreck the lives of a person. It is capable of setting a man’s life on a slippery path. We must use it carefully and also encourage others to do same.

SENTENCE SERMON

Social media is neither good nor evil, the user determines to get from it (good or evil).

MORAL LESSON

FOR ADULTS: Decide to make positive use of social media and educate others to do so.

FOR YOUTHS: Since social media is neutral, it is your responsibility to get the best out of it.

FOR INTERMEDIATES: Social media is like a two-edged sword, it can bless and destroy.
